How to Make a Fun Christmas Flat Ornament in the Hoop Design
Flat ornaments are a simple and easy in the hoop machine embroidery designs which are great for decorating the tree or house. Supplies you will need:
Tear away stabilizer
Felt
Ribbon
Glitter vinyl
Now that we have everything ready you need to pick a design. This instruction is based on the Ladybug Christmas Ornament (insert Link). I like this ornament, its fun and have a nice glittery edge that sparkles in the Christmas lights on the tree. The basic principles are the same for all the flat ornaments. All designs at Newfound Applique come with full picture instructions so don’t worry if you want to do a different flat ornament designs. All our flat ornaments can be found here.SO here we go
- Download the Ladybug Christmas ornament.

Load the design in your format on a stick and insert into your machine. Once the design is on your machine you can start.
1. Put tear away stabilizer in the hoop and run placement line for ribbon. Stitch step #1
2. Cut a piece of ribbon ¼”x9”and fold in half to form a loop.
3. Line the cut ends up with the placement line with the hooped end up top
4.Run placement line for the holly leaves. Stitch step #2
5 .Lay felt to cover entire placement line (3.5”x3.5”) and secure in place on top of hoop.
6. Run tack down stitch for the felt. Stitch step #3 Cut away excess felt where the leaves will meet the berries. Be careful no to cut the ribbon.
7.Run placement line for the berries. Stitch step #4
8.Lay felt to cover entire placement line (2”x1.5”) and secure in place on top of hoop.
9.Run tack down stitch for this piece. Stitch step #5 Cut away excess where the berries meet the leaves
10. Complete embroidery details stitch steps #6-10
11.Turn hoop over so that back of design/hoop is facing you.
12.Lay felt to cover entire design size (3.5”x4.5”) and secure in place on back of hoop.
13.Run tack down stitch for this piece. Stitch step #11 This goes all the way around the design.
14.Cut away all excess felt from back of design.
15. 11.Turn hoop so that the front of the design/hoop is facing you, and cut away excess felt, being careful not to cut the ribbon.
16.Complete all satin stitch steps #12 and 13.
17.Cut felt or vinyl slightly larger than the felt you added to the back of the hoop/design and tape in place on back of hoop. Make sure this piece is good side down, or same on both sides. This is the outline for the front.
18.Run last to stitch steps # 14 and 15
20.Remove design from hoop and gently tear away stabilizer and tape.
22.Cut away excess from the back vinyl/felt piece (gold) you added, making it larger than the front felt pieces. I used pinking shears for this but you can use regular scissors. This creates a decorative border. BE CAREFUL NOT TO CUT YOUR RIBBON HANGER.
